We live on a farm with a big barn and farm yard, so lots of free range for chickens. One separated herself from the others and started roosting in a bush next to our house. (so sweet! She coos at me when I walk by) She is 3 years old and beautiful golden chicken, but I don't know her breed.

She is now the only one I have and I am building a small coop for her near the house for when the weather gets cold.
Will she get lonely? During the day she hangs with the goats and donkey and sleeps by the house at night.

Do you think it best to bring in another older chicken for company?

Thank you for your thoughts on this.

I would say another chicken or 2 couldn't hurt... Now's a good time to get a pullet.

Good luck... she sounds like a sweetheart. Like my barred rocks are!

Another chicken to keep her company and help her stay warm thru the winter is probably best. Be sure and quarantine (sp?) any chickens you bring in so that your girl doesn't get sick.
Welcome to BYC.

* I have had a single hen for quite awhile and I think that worse than lonely (she's gets a lot of people attention), she's too bored. I just got another hen on Thursday, hope they get along after quarantine is over.

I think that since chickens are flocks animals, yes, she probably would get lonely.
