Great idea! I put one box in their grow-out cage and they loved it after they were through pecking it. I’m always looking for more things to compost. I’m gonna be the crazy neighbor that goes around grabbing everyone’s leaf backs before trash pick up.Maybe? Quail are actually pretty hardy when it comes to cold. As long as they're dry and have shelter, they can handle freezing temps quite well. It's better to give them little shelters scattered through their run. I use pens on the ground that are half covered with tarp for shelter when it rains and I give them small cardboard boxes that get composted when they get too worn and/or dirty.
... Mine made it through the winter ( -5-10 at night a few times) out in their aviary with a box full of hay and plastic sheets stapled up on the chicken wire walls to keep out the drafts..
