Will Quail la eggs in an aviary?

we have a home made "hut" if you will attached to an Aviary... but not getting many eggs my question is wil quail lay eggs in aviarys or do they need small spaces?

Quails will lay eggs where ever you put them, once the females are of laying age and they are receiving enough light, though the larger the enclosure the more difficult it would be to find them as they tend to lay anywhere.

we have had them about three weeks and only two eggs :[ none since we let them out if the hut

As said above, they will lay their eggs no matter where they are. If they are on a good diet, have oyster shell on the side, there is enough heat and light, it is possible they may be too stressed to lay. Make sure they are not being frightened by dogs, kids or anything else that might freak them out. Put cut branches in the aviary for hidey places so they feel safe and secure. Quail don't like to feel exposed.

You might also want to put some hay down for them to entice them to make nests out of the hay.

Give them time and they should be laying soon.

Where do you find oyster shell small enough for quail? I can't even find it small enough for my silkies. I tried hammering it-that was a joke!

I place a thick piece of paper (ads from the newspaper) on my garage floor, then spread a layer of chicken oyster shells, then pulverize it with a 5lb mini sledge hammer. Just the weight of dropping the hammer 2-3 inches is enough to smash it. It takes maybe 2 minutes to do a handful.

Go to your local feed store and see if they have oyster shell for automatic oyster shell dispensers. It is chipped really small and the quail can eat it right out of the bag. This is the only stuff I use for quail and chickens.

I use a coffe grinder to pulverize my larger feed and oster shells. Usually you can find a coffee grinder at thrif stores.
