If I let my hens free range outside of the fence will my rooster lead the hens back into the coop at night (coop is in fence area). The hens had their wings clipped by the previous owner and I really don't want to do this unless I really have to. The rooster was free range until he adopted me....now he is coop trained. I just don't want to start something I cant fix. I am not so good at chasing chickens right before nightfall!

It's partly a personality thing, too. My rooster is great with his girls. He tidbits them with treats, he flirts before mating and is gentle, but when it starts to get dusky out he's the first one in the coop.

X2
They won't need the rooster to go to the coop as long as they see the coop as home.
The hens adapted very quickly to the coop. They don't seem to understand how to return through the gate opening when i have it propped open.

Mine, too! But mine does roost by the door and keeps a sharp eye out. Very alert little guy. Too alert, maybe...

That’s cute. Can you show us a photo of him. 🥰
