Will Round up hurt the chickens?

Sorry that offends you, but some of us do try to inject sense (or science) into govt. regulations. And no matter how hard we try, sometimes other factors are taken into account when the final numbers come out.

But I think that another undenial fact is that Purple chicken is also out there and he never uses Round-up.

I may try the vinegar recipe. It is not about a neat lawn. I have 7.5 acres and I mow and do keep it all down, mostly weeds out there beyond the back yard. However, the buggers grow up against anything that is over 2" tall

I put up fencing for the chickens and I would guess I have a couple of acres of it to keep down now. I cannot weed whack or pull them. I just started using round up a couple of years before I got the chickens and what a difference it has made. Anyway, I will try the vinegar.

The problem with resurrecting an old thread like this, instead of posting a new one, is that about 80% of people DO NOT look at the dates and they read only the first post. So, I have a feeling we are about to have an avalanche of posts about ROundup

(Which, btw, is FAR MORE TOXIC than it is said to be, because although the official 'active ingredient' is fairly short-lived and arguably not so bad, there is very strong evidence showing that all the other allegedly-inert ingredients contained in the Roundup formulation make it really quite a lot more persistant in the environment and more dangerous to people, animals, chickens, etc).

ANYHOW, regarding your poison ivy:

If you know someone with goats, and have a way of fencing the area in for them, that would be your best bet.

Failing that, or if it is a smaller patch, smothering it under carpet with mulch on top of it for *several years* would get rid of the vast majority of it.

Otherwise, sure, try the vinegar on it and see how it does, but you will have to do it over and over and over and over again, so I would leave out the salt.

It'd be nice if you could find someone to HIRE to pull it out FOR you. That would probably work a lot better than spraying vinegar on it nine billion times. (If you do go with the vinegar, but it does not work as well as you wish, you might try getting some agricultural vinegar, if the feedstore has it in small enough size containers for you; it is much stronger and thus "kill-ier"
