My family is just starting with the idea of backyard chickens. I was looking into some breeds and these are some that caught my eye.

Rhode Island Red
Buff Orpington
Wyandotte
Australorp
Faverolles
"Easter Eggers"
Austra White
Hamburgs

Also, what should I keep in mind when thinking about which breed to get our rooster from?

What are your goals? Why do you want chickens? We all have our favorite breeds. My list would be different but what you have listed should give you a pretty flock, provide lots of eggs, and be good for meat if that is one of your goals.

Why do you want a rooster? Do you think they are pretty, want to hear one crow, think a rooster will add to your flock’s security, want fertile eggs, want to see the flock dynamics when you have a rooster with the hens, want bigger chicks for the meat, or something else? The only reason you need a rooster is for fertile eggs. Everything else is just personal preference. Many people have very nice flocks without any roosters, but if you want on it really helps to know specifically why you want one to make a specific recommendation.

Other than if you are breeding for color or pattern I don’t think it matters that much which breed you choose for your rooster. Some people will tell you that their Rhode Island Red rooster is a horrible brutal beast. Some will tell you that their Rhode Island Red rooster was the sweetest thing ever. Others will say the same thing about roosters from any breed you listed or didn’t list. Everyone will have an opinion based on their personal experience. We have different experiences.
