Will these work for nesting boxes?

I have 2 drawers out of an old cabinet. They are about 20 inches by 20 inches, but only about 4 inches deep. Is this too shallow? Will I have to cover them with a slanted piece of wood to keep them from pooping in them?

Are the chickens little banties?
Four inches seems way too narrow for my banty Cochins to nest in and certainly would not fit any of my standards. I use no less than 12 inches for my nest boxes.

No, they are standards. I'm not worried about the cabinet drawers being narrow, they are 20 inches wide and 20 inches long. I'm just wondering if the 4 inch depth is too shallow for them once I fill them with shavings. Thanks for your help!

Oh, I see!
Four inches on the depth is what I have. And I have some with hay and some with shavings. Never had an egg kicked out but maybe the right hen hasn't come along.

Sounds like you are good to go.

My neighbors used old dresser drawers when they first got their chickens. The girls did lay pretty good in them for awhile. But after several months the drawers/net boxes became a big trough for chicken poop. Chickens like to lay in secret. They are very private when it comes to laying. Funny thing is that they cluck so loud that everyone knows what they are doing!! silly chickens.
Give it a try, your girls may do just fine.
