So I know this is a bit early to be thinking about but I have some chicks who will be 6 months come December.(born 7/6) Will they wait until spring until they start laying? I thought I recalled reading that somewhere but I can't remember.

What breed are they? It will mostly depend on the chicken, but breed might play a part. I'll guess some will start laying, and others will wait.

Like previous poster said, may depend on the breed and where you are in regards to season/weather. I am in MN and had my first flock start laying at end of aug/begin fin of Sept (which put them 18-20 weeks). I lost one, but the other 2 laid for most of the winter. Not at top capacity but at least every few days. I now have 2 (Wyandotte and RIR) that should start in the next few weeks, and 2 more (EE and ISA brown) that will be starting to lay hopefully in the Sept/Oct range.

Lots of different breeds Americauna, polish, leghorn, houdan, ee's, orpington, cochin.
It's likely that the Orpington will start laying. I find that after one pullet starts laying, then at least a couple others will follow her example. But as it will be winter it is unlikely all will lay this year.

Best of luck! Have fun on your chicken adventure!
