We have a very large run, we have 7 chickens now with plenty of space, but we just purchased 8 chicks. We have 4 nesting boxes, although only a few of our older hens are laying. (We get 1-2 eggs right now from our 7 hens) The coop dimensions are
5 feet wide
8 feet long
6 feet tall.
it’s pretty big, we want our chickens to be fairly comfortable, will the coop be big enough for 15 chickens?
Thanks!!!!
We only keep them in from sunset to sunrise. The dimensions given are excluding nesting boxes.

No. Your coop is only 40 square feet, which would fit about 10 chickens with 4 square feet each... your coop must be about 60 square feet in order for it to be large enough for 15 chickens.

x2, though you *might* be able to get away with it if you have 1) sufficient roost space for 15 and 2) sufficient ventilation for 15. So that'd be 15' or more of linear roost, and 15 sq ft or more of ventilation left open 24/7.

We do have good ventilation, and plenty of roost space. We were going to pick up one chick today to make it 15, but they were out at the feed store. So we will only have 14. Our current chickens only take up about a third of the roost space, so hoping it might work out.

If it doesn't work, are you willing and able to enlarge the coop to accommodate more birds, or to sell excess birds? Best to have a back up plan, and a plan after that.

Yup! I think I can add on extra space if necessary, though I really do not want to sell my birds. Thanks for your help!

We have a very large run
How big is that in feet by feet?
Dimensions of run, and pics of run and coop(inside and out) would be most helpful here.

5x8 is perfect for 7 birds....
but really tight for 15 birds,
especially when taking about integrating(which works best with extra space).

Ok! I will try and get pictures, the run is 100+ square feet, which is where they usually hang out in the morning, and we let them free range in the afternoon.

You need, at minimum, a 150 sq ft runamd honestly I dont think that's enough when you are trying to integrate new chicks. For 15 chickens I have a 700 sq ft run and the big girls still occasionally chased the babies around for a while until they were out of view.
