Have you a hen that has been broody before? Just a thought: introduce her to the chick and see what happens.

I've mentioned on a couple of the state forums that I have a sick Ameracuana recovering in my living room. Monday, February 8, I had just finished washing Snowy with Suave for Kids 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner. I started the blow drying and sat her on a towel on the heating pad. Snowy was dry on top, but most of her fluff was damp, so we let Snowy continue to sit on the heating pad while I worked on wire mesh for a larger brooder for my Christmas Babies.

Dear husband walks in with a chick. He found it wandering down our road in the dark. He did locate the farmer, but due to biosecurity issues, the farmer gave the chick to Hubby.

So at this point I was in your situation. The Christmas Babies were about six weeks old. New guy looked about two weeks old.

I took the little stinker to the bathroom and washed him. I used the same shampoo that Snowy has been using. When I finished blow drying him, I sat him on the carpet near Snowy. I held him back (restrained the little eager thing) and gave Snowy a chance to look at him. When I finally let him go, ready to snatch up if something went wrong, he dove right under Snowy. Snowy wasn't sure what to do, but she started cooing and lifted her wing. He snuggled under Snowy's wing all night while he sang the Happy Chick Song.

Snowy still lets "Ford Prefect" sleep next to her. Snowy is only at point of lay and hasn't laid an egg in her life!

To save everyone that isn't a fan the googling of it, "Ford Prefect" was Arthur Dent's friend in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Ford was a hitchhiker! Anyway, I think my children get enjoyment out of having to explain why we named a chicken Ford.

Hope this helps! Btw, Ford slept between Snowy and the toy skunk for his first two nights. Snowy, looking at times like motherhood was really for OTHER birds, placed her wing on top of the toy and Ford snuggled in the "cave" she made. The children held Ford in the evenings to give Snowy a moment alone to eat or sleep. Ford isn't so clingy now, so Snowy is liking life much better this weekend.
