I found a couple of these old steel wire milk boxes. Interior dimensions are 18" long x 12" wide x 10" high. Will those work as nest boxes if I hang them on the coop wall? Or would 10" be to shallow (when hung on the wall on their sides they will stick out 10" from the wall so that's the width of the floor for nest box purposes). I would line them with some thin plywood so the wire would be covered. Thanks in advance.

I think they would be fine. I have a few boxes which are smaller than the recommended size. Trust me, two of the little darlings squeeze in them!! I wouldn't line them with wood. Just put a lot of hay or wood chips in the bottom and make an edge on the front, so they don't kick everything out... Good luck!

I think they would work, too. I was thinking lots of straw, also. The nice thing about chickens is that they aren't fussy about the nesting boxes. I've used old stereo speakers nailed on the walls and they loved them.

I use the plastic "milk crates" they sell at wallyworld for file/storage. I stuffed them with hay and have to add more about once a month.
