Will this work? Broody & Bator @ the same time?

No, I do not. If they are fertile I would expect some to develop at least some under a broody. If they are dark brown, it can be hard to tell by candling, especially of they develop just a little before they quit.

Opening one of four does not say that all have not at least started developing. Practically every egg I check is fertile, but I always have a few that never start to develop. Your sample of one out of four is so small that I do not consider it conclusive.

I don't know what you have done with the other three. I really don't do searches to find all your posts and I sometimes miss some. As long as they pass the smell test, I'd leave them either in the incubator or under the broody until day 25 or so. If you discontinue them, I'm sure you will open them and check on them.

Thanks

They all looked the same.

The broody is doing well. She doesn't like me taking her off the nest once a day, but she gets over it quickly. She eats, drinks, poops and dustbathes, all the while daring Impy to come within 5 ft. of her. Impy backs down every time. Smart boy

Then it's back to her eggs.

If his fascination gets him thinking the eggs aren't all rolling quite right, change the angle to 15. That tends to work with chicken eggs well, better than the factory setting. But then again, that 'bator may already be set at 15.

< preen > Yup. It is.

Thanks, will do. There is one egg in particular that I am worried about because it isn't really pointed tip down. I'll get Keith to change the angle and see what happens.

Most of my broody hens can care for 15+ chicks easy. best to place the chicks under her the first night they start hatching.

That was the plan. The bator and the broody are both due to hatch the same day, Lord willing and the creek don't rise.

I'm only setting eight eggs total because of the broody's age and she's not quite grown yet. If we were talking about one of my brahma hens, I'd feel completely comfortable giving her 15 eggs or more.
