Will this work?

I went everywhere today looking for the thermometer/hydrometer with the probe and I couldn't find one. We are building the bator tonight so I got a acu-rite wireless weather thermometer/hydrometer with no pobe. It has two temp. reading and two humidity readings and a daily high low reading. Do you think it will do for my first hatch while I look for the probe kind? Oh and I guess it's intended use is that you put the small box outside and then it sends a signal to the box you are suppost to keep inside, but I thought I would just keep them both in the bator on either side. any thoughts?

The probe is used to help you gauge the inside temperature of the eggs, because that's what you stick inside your water wiggler. It's an extra aid to help increase your chances of hatching.

The inside temperature of the eggs will vary from the outside (air) temperature. I can't remember if the internal temperature is typically a few degrees lower or higher.

You don't have to have it, but it's good to have.

We found our Accu-Rite with probe at WalMart for $12.00, Lowe's has them also.

I went to lowes and walmart. They were both sold out. Darn it. I wonder if I could get a thermometer with a probe to put in the wiggler and use the one I bought today for humidity. I just couldn't find a themometer/hydrometer with a probe anywhere. I did set up the one I bought today in a sort of make shift metal bread box just to see if the two readings would adjust the same and they did. If i opened the box they both went down and vis versa. Oh this is stressful. now I know what you all are talking about, but so fun too.

If you can't find the accurite probe one try petsmart or petco and look for a flukers.

It has been recommended that they are very accurate.

That is very simaliar to the one I bought today. The one I bought is an acurite it is a indoor/outdoor and has two temp. and humidity readings. I was just afraid that I wouldn't get proper temp. readings without the probe in the water wiggler. I don't want them to not hatch because i messed something up.

Did you look in the kitchen gadget section of Wal-mart?...That's where I found my accurite with the probe....

You should be fine with the one you have. I don't use the wiggler, no place to put it in my incubator. If you can try to place you unit on something so it is equal to the middle of the eggs. The wiggler and probe is nice but not neccessary and sometimes leads you to second guessing the temp.

I used the water wriggler and accurite probe with my silkie eggs that just hatched yesterday.

I noticed that even though the WW was averaging 99.5, the air temps were averaging more like 99.

That might explain why my chicks did not even begin to pip until the very end of day 21...

If I had been monitoring it based on air temps, I'd have knocked it up just a hair for an over all slightly higher WW temp and maybe my guys would have hatched sooner.

Either way, even though they were not early by any stretch, they all did come through OK, albeit I needed to help them out at the end.

Of course it will work! You don't *need* to know the temp inside the egg.
Monitering and maintaining the temp at egg height (and humidity) is what you need for a succesful hatch.
I never saw where using a weasel toy in the incubator actually *hurts* anything (until I just read Susan's post).
I would suggest not using 'simulated toy temp' as your only temp reading.


I have / had several similar Accu-Rite thermo-hygro long range units for the greenhouse.
They don't have a long life if you use them in a hatcher situation, lol, the chick fuzz must get in there and monk up the readings.
