will tylan work for chickens with respiratory infections?

Have a 2 year old 4 lb Araucana and she has frothy white bubbles in both eyes. I have 26 chickens and so far she is the only one with this. I have had High levels of ammonia as the days are now getting warmer. And wondering if I should use tylan as a precaution. She is now in the house isolated from the other chickens. Would also want to know how other chicken caregivers in MI are able to keep ammonia levels down. We are ventilated well but the litter in the coop has to come out but the weather is still to cold to do a total clean out.
I would stir up the litter very well with a rake, and put a couple of fresh bags of pine shavings on top. Ammonia can cause respiratory infections as well as cause cataracts and eye problems.

Thanks for the info on stirring the litter. We have had a few warmer days in MI and we decided to do a total removal of litter, as for the chicken in house she is now back with her family and we are excited to report all are happy and healthy. It was the ammonia level being to high and burning her eyes. Antibiotics were not needed for any chickens. What I have learned is ventilation is a must and its a fine balancing act between keeping them warm in Mi winters and keeping quality air in your coop for the chickens to breath. Its always tricky this time of the year in MI as it can still be cold here for the months of March and April. Removing the well developed litter to soon could really hurt the chickens as far a heat that the turned litter is giving them. As far as knowing not to treat with antibiotics that was easy, with in 4 hours of the removing Marg from the coop, the foamy eyes disappeared.

Thanks for the update. It is great to hear that everything cleared up for you with the change in litter. I was having similar problems about a month ago when I was not able to locate pine shavings at my local stores. I didn't have foamy eyes, but I could really smell the ammonia. I was sure glad to finally find some pine shavings. Good luck on your flock.

I know this post was written months ago but I wanted to respond for anyone reading it in the future. I bought Tylan 50 injectable and was told by a breeder to drip it in the bird's mouth. I called the company, not about this, but about whether or not to refrigerate it. In the course of the conversation, the vet from the company found out that I was not injecting it but dripping it in the mouth. She told me to stop immediately because the formulation of the injectable was created to be absorbed into tissue and can actually burn the chick's throat. She told me there is a water soluble version and suggested that vet's sometimes have it on hand.

You guys saved my chicken! One of my polish frizzels became ill with a rattly respiratory infection. Local vets wouldnt see her because she is a chicken. They suggested a livestock vet about 40 miles away. I bought the tylan 50 because of b.y.chicken suggestions. It was only $18 at feed store. I seperated her and gave 1/4 cc twice a day for five days just under the skin at back of neck . It has been a month now with no signs of sickness at all. She is perfectly fine! Yay for my favorite chicken and b.y.chicken!

My vet gave me Tylan powder for their water. I can't remember how long he told me to give it for and forgot to ask about how long to hold the eggs after the last dose! UGH Will ask tomorrow but was wondering if any of you knew. He did tell me to hold the eggs which I have been doing but also wanted to ask him now IF I could scramble them and give them back to them. Have any of you done that? Would it be over dosing them by feeding the eggs back to them once fried?

I'm glad I was looking on here about this because I like the idea about raking the litter. I will do that and use it in the garden since I have it fenced and then do the bleach solution just to kill any germ in the soil and then add fresh litter I think. Can't do it right now though because it's rainy it looks like up until Thurs.

OK I called today and he said 7-10 days for what he gave me on the tylan sp? . Then said to hold the eggs for 10 days once I get done giving it to them. I had asked if I could scramble the eggs and feed them back to them and she told me yes. Just filled up the 2nd eighteen pack so that's really nice they're not going to go to waste at least!! They should love this!!!
