Why is Donald not spelled Dognvald?

Different roots. Donald is from Gaelic (Dòmhnall), not Norse.

I had no idea! The fact that they rhyme, both the full names and nicknames, convinced me that they were variants of the same root name.

I would have thought because they both have messed up hairdos. And you named your Donald after the famous one.

I had no idea! The fact that they rhyme, both the full names and nicknames, convinced me that they were variants of the same root name.

I wouldn't be surprised if one influenced the other - or they both kind of worked their way together - in how they came to sound as they were anglicised.

Could well be a shared root if you go even further back to something like proto-indo-european.

Isn't it odd how one thought leads to another and suddenly out of the blue something wonderful appears? The above prompted Dozy Doe which led to this - the genre isn't my cup of tea but the dancing is great, and all the slip sliding and lyrics seem apposite
