I have always done one. Works great for my ducks, but I just got a call from my partner today (I'm out of town) and she clipped one wing each on our new Barbezieux chickens and they still managed to get on top of the 36" garden table and eat all the starts. Oops. So I think it is a little dependent on the breed too. The best solution might be to have a covering for the fenced area if that is something you can do.
