So, Wing Clipping Is:

  • Great! I use it on all the flock. It doesn't hurt them, so what's the prob? I'd encourage it.

  • I only do so on my most troublesome poultry. It must be uncomfortable for them, but safer.

  • I don't like it. It restricts their natural tendencies, so not in my backyard. You shouldn't use it.

  • NEVER! Its so oppressive, even if it supposedly 'doesn't hurt'. It should be BANNED!

  • I've never had to use it, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't. I can't really judge this.

When my Rooster was a teenager ager we were all standing watching him and we have a tiny chair on our 6ft fence well we think he wanted to land on the chair so he jumped it landed on top of the 6ft fence. We were all laughing but I had to quickly run around to the other side because 1. I have a problem neighbor who dislikes us so I didn't want him jumping into her giant yard and be chasing him 2. the road. I got him to turn around and jump back into his area. I've never clipped my flock's wings probably never will as I'm nervous with that stuff lol. but here was a story for anyone.

Silkies are not strong layers though. One of my silkies lays for about a week then gets broody and stops laying for a month 😂. They are my favourite breed and are helping raise my two beautiful polish chicks.

I know... we used to have one and are getting another this Christmas.... its great for me though because she can do some hatching for me!

I’ve never been in the situation where I’d need to, but I’d be open to it if I needed to, if done correctly then it doesn’t permanently alter them right ? Those feathers grow back the same as any busted feather would when molting?
Clipping wing feathers doesn't permanently alter them, the feathers grow back within a month or two. :)

Pinioning is when the flight feathers are clipped off right at the feather shaft, which leaves them flightless for the rest of their life.
