Does anybody here clip their chickens wing feathers to keep them from flying? I want mine to stay put behind the fence when I need them too, and I probably won't be able to cover their run, for reasons I have described elsewhere.

I read about a way you can permanently clip wings by cutting off the outside joint on the wings when they are young chicks. Then they'll never be able to fly. Have any of you tried that? I'm sure some think that's cruel, but it seems less cruel than having them get squashed by a car or mutilated by the neighbor's dog because they got somewhere they weren't supposed to be...

Something tells me I'm opening a can of worms with that last one...but if anybody has any "non-angry" thoughts about the procedure I'd be interested.

I clip the flight feathers off of one wing. Eventually after a moult they will grow back, but otherwise it works well
