You know, obviously if we're on BYC, we are the ones more involved with the animals. Our partners and spouses maybe aren't as committed as we are. The whole "waving brooms and all" seems to be a default reaction for the people who don't spend every day taking care of the chickens.Several weeks ago, Hubs and I were heading to Charlotte to see stepdaughter and her fiancé. He was supposed to pick me up after church, and off we’d go.
Well, I was sitting out front, waiting, when he texted that he couldn’t get the girls into the run. He has a habit of getting a bit excited and waving brooms and all, which definitely doesn’t work.
I texted back and asked if he’d tried tossing watermelon in the run. Fifteen minutes later, he picked me up and we were off, the girls safely locked up.
I’m afraid that I took a little too much pleasure telling the people asking if I needed a ride, “No, I’m just waiting on my husband while he tries to catch the chickens.”![]()

Hopefully now he appreciates how much work you put in!
The funny part is now that we're officially closing on more property, all of a sudden my guy is talking about getting cattle and sheep. I swear I overheard him tell someone we were thinking of getting meat birds. Meat birds!! When I plucked and processed the single cockerel, he literally ran in the opposite direction. This must be one of those Royal We situations...
