wing lifting

In most breeds, but not all. The APA Standard allows for wings to be clipped in Canada and Egyptian geese, and Muscovy, East Indie, Call and Mallard ducks. 2010 edition, page 33. It is certainly frowned upon, but it is allowable in these breeds under APA rules.

Understood, but the post was about a chicken.

Good to know. It appeared that your post was a general statement about wing clipping in all show birds. I don't speak in code, and GSL is not a recognized abbreviation in exhibition circles.

This is a good example of what has been discussed in another thread, the confusion which results when people take it upon themselves to make up abbreviations for things which are not normally abbreviated. I still can't for the life of me figure out what it means, and in case anyone wants to fill me in, there's no need. I won't follow in your footsteps and use it anyway. I'm just not that lazy.

I haven't got a clue what GSL means either, and also find the proliferation of unexplained abbreviations annoying.

edited to add: You know what--I ASSUMED it was a chicken, at least partly because the 2nd post referred to trimming chicken wings.

Can anyone read the first post and think they're asking about show birds? I suppose it's likely but I really don't think so. But good to know for other folks about it disqualifying for show.

It's not clear, but from the context, I'd support your assumption, and I seldom assume.

Re: abbreviations; see, we can agree on some things.

From being on here, I'm assuming this is a Golden Sex-Link? In that case, she can't be shown under APA.

I would go ahead and just clip one wing. The scratching thing is probably going to get worse when you clip because instead of ending at a smooth, rounded end, the vane of each feather will be cut off and will most likely wind up smacking you in the face a time or two.

I remember, when I was younger, our birds would walk around with lead weights on one leg to keep them off balance. Once they got older and heavier, they never really seemed to have the urge to jump or fly up the fence.
