Hey I was wondering can I wing sex by day old chicks I looked and they have tall feather, not the tall short pattern that indicates a girl, but I justgot off another thread thatsays wing sexing only works with purebreeds, ( mine are EE mixes)

Wing feather sexing only works when a fast feathering mslevis put over a slow feathering female.....resulting chicks are sex linked with each gender inheriting the featheribg rate of the opposite sex parent. When that has been done, reading must be done within three days of hatch.
So, no, it is not a purebred thing, it is a genetics thing....but, yes, it only works for certain chicks

Ok so my chicks may not all be male
Probably not!
I wing sexed a batch for funsies last time and it was not accurate at all. So unless they are set up for wing sexing I really wouldn’t recommend on relying on that method. Actually with my batch I tried a bunch of different techniques from watching who grows feathers slower to looking for thicker legs. I was pretty accurate at 5 weeks. Some of the roosters were pretty obvious at 2 weeks and others lasted till 8 before starting to look rooish and some of the hens still look masculine. With EE’s there are some colour patterns that are male specific. Maybe something worth looking into.

what does this word mean? Was it a typo or referring to something specific?

Wing sexing vs Non wing sexing is a hotly contested way of sexing chickens, on here. I am firmly in the camp that its impossible to do with any reliability. You will be right 50% of the time. I also tried to wing sex my chickens... I swore I had half cockerels, so I frantically got more to replace those cockerels. Yea... Chicken math at its best. I ended up with a total of 13 pullets in my original flock.

Understanding the science behind it is key in eliminating confusion/debate. Applied correctly is quite reliable.....but applied broadly you'll see the outcomes like you had
