He sighed with relief. For a moment he had been worried about brain damage. Amnesia, it seemed, was her only current problem. "I'll ferret something up for you in an hour or so. You shouldn't eat right away. Your stomach hasn't had any food for three weeks. It would be too much of a shock for your system." He gave her another leaf-full of water. "Take it slow."

she nods, and slowly drinks it, then perks up, seeming to be looking for something, but she was not sure why

Bloodwing noticed her movements, and looked away for a moment. "Scarlet . . ." he swallowed a moment, then drew something from under one of the piles of lichen. "You should know that we aren't in any clan territory right now. There have been birds chasing us these past three weeks. I haven't been able to bring you to any clan--they're everywhere, always waiting for us. I've had to treat you here, out of sight," he motioned to the thick tree stump. "But that time I mentioned, when they attacked while you were unconscious, they dropped something." Cautiously, he brought out what looked like a wooden token of some kind, embossed with some sort of symbol. "Does it mean anything to you?"

"I need to know what it means, first!" he urged anxiously. "These birds have been searching for us for weeks. If you know why, tell me."

Bloodwing nodded. When Scarletnight shut her beak, it wasn't even worth trying to break her silence. He slipped the token back under his wing, out of sight. He would have to find out what the symbol meant, if he was going to keep either one of them out of harm's way. "I'll go get you some food," on the way to the entrance, he stopped. The memory of all the nights trying to wake Scarlet, dragging her through the forest trying to find some safe haven, replayed in his mind for a moment. Just a moment. Leaning close, he nuzzled Scarlet's beak with his own. "Don't you dare leave me like that again."

He grinned, leaped out of punching-range, and walked out into the forest.
