Making sure the ID bade was centered on his chest--and right side up this time--, Bloodwing navigated the tunnels and burrows until he found the room he was looking for. Pits full of water from the natural underground spring shimmered in the vague sheltered light, ominous and foreboding. Without realizing it, Bloodwing had tiptoed to the edge, gazing intently into the pool. All ready he could feel his hackles raised and beak gritted nervously. All ready the feeling of air being squashed from his lungs, the helplessness of tumbling through the sea of water without any sense of direction began to crowd his thoughts, and he felt faintly dizzy.

(what about being push into the sea by your own brother?)
scarlet was beside him, she carefully check the water level, it was right to the bottom of the wing

Finally, Bloodwing closed his eyes. The water didn't follow him into the darkness of his own eyelids, and he took a deep breath. The sweet aroma of roses filled his nostrils, and he felt an odd peace come over him. Scarlet was here, in this dark place, and that, even more than his rational reasoning, was a comfort above all else.

Still, as his foot hit the water, he was reminded of the suffocating mass of water against his chest, remembered it filling his lungs. He closed his eyes tighter.

"I know," he murmured softly, eyes still shut. Good job, Bloodwing. She must think you're real manly, his thoughts sneered, You're standing in two inches of warm, soothing water with your beautiful mate only a few inches away and the prospect of food waiting for you, and all you can think about is drowning.

Frustrated with himself, Bloodwing took a deep breath, and plunged in, head-first. The silence of the underwater world scared him, and he opened his eyes again as he sputtered to the surface, wet crown flopping listlessly to one side. A panicky few seconds later, he realized his feat, and a broad grin spread over his face. The image of his brother laughing on the shore as he fought for breath, of the current dragging him into the bottom of the stream, all vanished in a wink.

"You know," he remarked, shivering slightly as he smiled. "It is rather nice."

"Oh, hibernating squirrels, so it is," he peered over in interest at the weird symbols. "Well, I was always for the dramatic." He grinned. "As for being a fool, I'd hoped you'd realized that before consenting to be mine," he shrugged. "After all, I can be a bit of a handful sometimes . . ." with a deft move, he swung a wing upwards, grabbed Scarlet, and pulled her into the water, though preventing her head from going under.
