Silvermist flew back, away from the line of fire, and crouched, ready to spring again.

With a deft spin, the Aseel rolled away from Iceberry, struggling to his feet. He stood there, panting, eyes wide. "Yes," he said, slowly. "Perhaps I am."

"Perhaps isn't good enough" She growled, pacing towards him

"Wait," Silvermist stood next to Iceberry, staring at the Aseel. "We'll give you one more chance. Give us the pullet, and you can leave in peace," she mimicked the rooster's words, eyes dark.

"That . . . that can be arranged," he said, sagging, defeated. He strode towards Silvermist, grabbing the pullet from the Orpington and bringing her towards the two hens.

Surprised, Silvermist watched him. She couldn't believe it. He seemed so resilient, so strong, and yet here he was, giving his prize into their hands.

A moment later, she knew her surprise was warranted.

As the Aseel got within five strides, he suddenly threw the pullet aside and leaped at Silvermist, pinning her to the ground before she could react, one foot planted on her chest, wings to either side of her head, and one long, dripping spur close to her throat.

"Now," he panted, as gently as if he was making pleasant conversation at tea time. "One move from any of you, and I will slit her throat."

Iceberry's eyes widened with horror "No! Don't kill her!"

The Orpington gasped from the attacks of Nightwhisper the small black bird. Having surrendered the pullet to the Aseel, he flew up into the nearest tree, trying to get away from the pursuing birds. He aimed a kick at Nightwhisper's chin on his way up into the steady branches.

Nightwhisper perused the Orpington, willing to finish the fight where it began. But,when he got near the cock, the blow to his chin caught him off-guard and he fell to the ground. Wiping the blood off his face,Nightwhisper looked back to see the Aseel holding the small pullet captive. He gasped, then dare not take a step forward. He felt frozen.

Wildheart pressed his wing bends to the ground, heaving himself to his feet. He nodded to Silver with a smile in thanks before pacing after the Aseel, orange eyes blazing with mischeif.

He mounted the downed Wyandotte, clinging painfully to the cock's comb for balance, and leapt off to fall crashing onto the Aseel's back, sending them both rolling and giving the pullet a breif opportunity to escape. "GO!" he shouted at her, waving a wing toward the forest as he lay, claws locked with the Aseel's to restrain any retaliation.

"On second thought," he said mildly, staring down at Silvermist curiously. She glared back, beak fixed and eyes narrowed. "Keep the pullet. This one will do just as well."

A rustling came from the bushes behind the Aseel. Silent as a shadow, the figure of a chicken, tall, with dark, glossy feathers appeared behind the violent rooster. He glanced at Iceberry, and shook his head, putting a flight-feather to his beak.

Iceberry glanced at the rooster and nodded slightly "You can't take either of them" She growled, keeping him distracted

The Aseel laughed as the black bird pelted him with his weapons, still grasping Silvermist. "You've made your choice clear."

With a grin, he drew one long, dripping spur deep into Silvermist's chest. Her eyes widened, a gurgling gasp coming from her throat as she fell back, limp, attempting one last kick at the Aseel before lying still, chest heaving as blood leaked quietly from her wounds. The Aseel stood solemnly, unsteadied by the black bird, and raised his other spur, attempting to cast it deep into the Leghorn's throat.

Suddenly the shadow jumped forwards, into the light, and into the Aseel. The two birds toppled over, struggling together as they rolled about on the dusty ground.
