Wingless Chickens

Is a Schmoo some kind of wingless/flightless bird I've never heard of?

, I'm guessing you're one of them young folks.

A shmoo was a cartoon type character from, what, the 70's? I think.

Cannot recall which cartoon he ended up on.

Of course, this was before the cartoons were all made in Japan

here's a link that explains the shmoo - I was wrong -- but I am sure that some cartoon had a shmoo on it, too - maybe scoobydoo or something.

eta - wrong again - it was The Flintstones.

When you think about it, it'd be of some use to the production leghorn chains. Less room needed because the birds wouldn't have wings that needed to be stretched.

Actually, I was thinking of these guys from a showroom perspective as well. Can your imagine? Maybe there could be frizzle, naked neck, wingless show chickens!

A number of studies have been carried out on the wingless chicken. There are two forms of this gene- one is sex linked recessive and the other is autosomal (not found on a sex chromosome) recessive.

For some reason, during embyonic development, the cells at the end of the wing bud die. The cell death then spreads to the rest of the wing bud which causes the wing not to form.
