It started just like any other winter morning. Wake up. Get shoes on. Run to the chicken coop before the snow soaks into my shoes. Except one thing... I had noticed a peculiar odor on my run to the coop. Usually I would suspect it was the neighbor man smoking or exhaust from a nearby vehicle. But this was different. It was a smoky smell, one that I could not identify. As I pondered what it could be, I ran faster to the coop. The smell got stronger. My heart pounded rapidly at the thought that something was burning. I opened the roof of the coop and everything seemed normal. Until I moved the heat lamp that is. I had left it plugged in overnight because of the especially frigid temperatures. At first, I was confused. Why did Mo look funny? Then it hit me. What had happened was one of the chickens had knocked the cover off of the heat lamp, then, a huddled chicken(Mo) was burned by it. It's only fortunate that nothing more happened. Only a few burned feathers. But little did I know that this was only the beginning of things. Mo had always been the adventurous one. The one who first left the run when I opened the door,, the one that was the first to perch on top of the brooder. I had a special place in my heart for this chicken and that's why I was so concerned for her when I saw the burn. I knew the other chickens would in a way laugh at the deformity and find it a reason to pick on Mo. And so they did. They pecked her regularly to let her know that she looked funny. This sure shook things up in the order because the next day, I was getting pecked by my favorite chicken! Apparently, Mo realized that it was my fault for her burn or something like that and began to peck me whenever I approached her. So that was that. But she did get a new name. You guessed it; Pecky.(Hey, I was only 10!)

Every night, I go to the coop and count my chickens. I can't sleep without making sure they are all there. One night I noticed one of my hens was missing, it was my New Hampshire. I went with my little flashlight trying to find her. Not in the garage. Not in the trees. Not under the bushes. Were could she be? I checked in the nesting box, around the coop. Nope, nothing. There was nothing I could do but wait.

Days passed and nothing, I accepted the fact that a predator got her and now she is dead. I began to freak out. What if the predator came again?

After a month pass, guess what? She came back! I was both surprised and impressed, because she didn't come alone, she came back with 6 chicks! Heck, who knows were her nest was. Man, she was a great mother, she would fight off anyone who got close to her and her brood. She even once decided to take down one of the rooster (Not the alpha of course).

Nalla is a hen who is crossed between a buff Brahma and buff Orpington. Last year she was badly beaten up by a rooster named Douglas. Because she was so badly beaten up by Douglas she was scared of every rooster. Mica was an Isa Brown. She started to get picked on because she started to walk like a penguin. Both hens had to be separated from their flock and needed company. Both Nalla and Mica was put together and became good friends.
Joy was a buff Orpington. She hatched out five chicks, one hen and four roosters. One of the roosters was deformed. His name was Kia(Kī). Kia could not walk. Before Kia new it his mother and sister and brothers moved in with older hens. Kia could not go with them for the other hens would pick on him. Kia needed company.
Fall had came and Nalla and Mica moved into a new coop. In this coop was Kia. Mica didn't notice Kia. She thought he wasn't alive for he just lay on the ground. Nalla noticed Kia. Kia was a rooster, and Nalla noticed. She knew that he was alive. She also noticed that he was young and needed to be taking care of.
Nalla put a side the fact that she was scared of all roosters and adopted Kia as if she had hatched him out herself. She would call to him with food for him. Nalla could not unerstand why Kia couldn't come when she called to him. Nalla would keep Kia warm at night. Then Mica would come over and huddle up next to her friend, Nalla. There they would sleep together all night long keeping each other warm. During the day the three would keep each other company.
Nalla took care of both Kia and Mica until they passed away. Kia died between three to four months old. Mica had to be culled about a month after Kia died. Nalla then had to be moved back with her flock. Douglas was now gone and one of Kia's brothers was the new rooster. His name was José(Hōsā). José was much nicer to Nalla than his father, Douglas, was.
Nalla is still living in this flock. She has had a son and his name is Niki. José is the father of Niki. Nalla is now 2.5 years old for she hatched in the spring of 2015. There is a new rooster who has just taking over Nalla's flock. His name is Duke and is not related to Douglas. Even though Nalla has never gone broody those who think back on when she adopted Kia could say that Nalla had went broody to take care of the son of the rooster that had been so mean to her.

What an incredible heartwarming story:hit. It truly shows that chickens are not stupid and cowardly, but much more complex and loving. You need to share this with more people. I have to ask though- why was mica culled?

Mica started having some serious problems because of the way she walked which started causing her pain. Her insides decided to come out one day and that is when it was decided that she had to be culled. I miss Mica, she was one of my favorites.:hit
