We rescued a buff orpington rooster last week. Right now he is our only adult chicken and is all alone in the coop. When can I let him out to free range? I feel bad he is cooped up all alone.

He really ,really needs some other hens, chickens are group animals, and he’s a rooster so his job is to be with the hens doing his rooster business. I don’t see why he can be allowed outside to free range, you will just want to keep an eye on him because he’s all alone and easy pickings.

We are just starting out and our others are just chicks in their brooder. It will be a while before he has company. My concern is that he will not go back into the coop in the evening. I don't want to chase him all over the yard and freak him out

How big is your coop, in feet by feet?
Does it have a run attached?

How old is this rooster, in months?

Our coop is 24' x 11'. No run, yet.

I opened the door today and let him decide. He came out happily. Worked in the garden with us and then went back in on his own. I guess I was worried about nothing. Thanks everyone! Here's a pic of him checking out the chicks
