Winter and Summer Watering system w/ waterer nipples and heater.

NewPioneer...

So let me get this straight... I recommend to the poster of the article an idea that I use. JimmyWalt then comes along says he has a better solution than mine and writes about it. I point out the differences and the advantages of mine and you get on my case about "other people's ideas"? Really? I hear what you are saying... but you are addressing the wrong person.

Again... many articles here about the dangers aquarium heaters... your choice... but I would point out again the difference between a bird bath heater and a aquarium heater with a thermocube..

1. Cost... they are about the same...
2. Efficiency... bird bath will cost less every month...
3. Safety... Birth bath heaters were designed to be outside in the elements. Aquarium heaters are not... you decide!

If you take any issue to my points... then please speak up. Do you take issue by my pointing out the obvious?

But yes... I take issue to someone providing advice that is less than safe... I think people should speak up about that just like I have seen many articles here about the potential for fire with coop heaters. Do they all catch fire? NO.... but we know that happens.
Nobody came along and said they had a ''better idea'' . The word was ''cheaper''. don't take offence to that. Most of us are trying to save a dollar where ever we can. Sometimes I find it helpful to re-read the whole thread again from the start to clear up any confusions. I apologize if I sounded like I was getting on your case, things just started to sound a little condescending rather than informational. So, can I ask a serious question to anyone who might have an answer? Why is it dangerous to use a submersible aquarium heater to heat chickens water that will be outside in the winter?

They are dangerous because they were not intended to be run outside where the temperature swings far more than in a house. As I said before there are many posts here and on the Internet about that and you also can also simply read the instructions (warning labels) that comes with most if not all aquarium heaters... but now you did say "CHEAPER".... correct? Guess what... it's not cheaper than the BirdBath heater (when combined with the required thermocube). Not cheaper to purchase and not cheaper to run and MOST IMPORTANT to me... it is not safer than a birdbath heater. So why is this even being discussed?

Here is an example of one such post... https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/389587/using-aquarium-heaters ... if you search you will find more... trust me!

Can I please ask somebody who has an answer for the reason a submersible aquarium heater is DANGEROUS to use in chicken water? I'm sure there are more than 2 people in the world who have used one and I do love my chickens and I did read the instructions and it said NOTHING about using for drinking water or outdoor use. It just said that it must be completely submerged before turning it on, which I did. Will my chickens die from drinking this water? In regards to ''cheaper'', I was only correcting the words that were used, which totally change the meaning of the statement. I also NEVER said this was ''safer'' to use than a birdbath heater. Read my posts from over a month ago, way before you came in, and I talked about wanting to use a birdbath heater. They are ''ideal'' , but, we are using something else and that is o.k. Unless, there is a reason it should NOT be used. So, please, for my chickens safety, will somebody please tell me, other than its not energy efficient, why should aquarium heaters not be used?

well, i will step in and say this is going to far. new pioneer, i have used the submersible, last i checked , which was a few years ago they were a little pricey. i am sure that if thats what you want to use it is fine. i did have an aquarium in my garage and my fish did not die. i dont look for it to last long if it is under a big strain. it depends on your weather. with that being said there is no need for you to defend your choice. your money, your chickens. they are not going to die. all the safety features in them for fish still apply . nycue, same applies for you. i am sure he can read just fine as can anyone else that is reading these posts. your chickens, your choice. this post was started as someone who was proud of what he had accomplished with his water system. and he tried to share with others. this man apologized to you and you threw it in his face. may i remind everyone this is a SOCIAL network designed to talk chicken and help our neighbor out when we can.

Mine has been working all winter (temps between -12 and 20 degrees for over 4 weeks). I have an aquarium heater and submersible fountain pump to keep the water moving.

Heater from walmart for about $15 and fountain pump from Harbor Freight for about $5.

So I didn't stick to the winter water plan. I found I go out to visit my babes enough I might as well just bring out water anyways. I think having a constant supply for summer will be my problem. I'm away more in the summer. I really like the cup and PVC waterers..... BUT will my chickens convert back to the other waterer for winter? I can't use PVC in winter .
