Yep horse bedding and comes in a bale that weighs a ton [feels like]
How much do you pay for one of those bales? they are 5.50 here and I top dress every ones beds every 2 weeks. the chickens coop will be up to the ceiling by spring. They have no handles, those darn plastic bags are slippery than a ice rink. I can get some from a differing mill that are in paper MUCH prefer those but roads are worse to go there.
Sure wish we had a mill around here. I have to depend on our only feed store.I go to The Mill of Belair in Maryland to get most of my ducks needs. Even tractor supply co. I go to local farms for hay/straw. But I'll definitely look into the shavings and see who has what.
I notice that too A but usually by the time everyone has gone in for the night the smell is gone. I keep my houses well ventilated too. Not much choices here as to where to buy things like that.I have found that the plastic-wrapped shavings give off quite a bit of volatile compounds (quite aromatic) when I open them, and I don't like to subject the duckies to that, so I buy from a hardware store that carries the paper-wrapped shavings. Even so, sometimes the shavings are so fresh, they come out smelling strongly of resin. So I try to restock so that they are not too whiffy when I use them.
Since I sometimes put room service off till later in the day, I like to keep some less aromatic on hand. You are right - in a more open air shelter, the resiny scent clears out pretty quickly.I notice that too A but usually by the time everyone has gone in for the night the smell is gone. I keep my houses well ventilated too. Not much choices here as to where to buy things like that.
