Winter Broiler Projects-share your progress :)

oh and another thing- they won't eat scraps!! why in the world is that?? sometimes i put in scraps and then sprinkle food on top so they will get the hint, but frankly they just don't get it.

Trager smoked first chicken dinner 4lbs 6 oz chicken :) yumm! my 4 year old wanted me to go cook one more just for him he was humming my 16 month old one whole leg section. none went to waste! Stock in the morning

mine did great on FF and saved me a ton of $ on feed. I went through 21 in 3 weeks, (8 adults in this household) freezers empty. Will do 100 next round

I can't wait! Only have 3 chickens left in freezer from my last batch a few months ago. Getting 50 this time, with the deer meat about to go in the freezer and 10 Turkeys going in sometime in March I will be shopping for a new freezer this month. :) If I can get a cow to slaughter from my parents and if my honey will shoot a hog or 3. Along with the garden I will be going to the store for only cleaning supplies, paper products and hygiene products. Say bye bye to that huge grocery bill!

so tell me, what do you all do?

1. continuous feed (24 hours)
2. 12 on and 12 off
3. other option....

i am doing about 3 meals a day, but since i want them to be ready in 2 weeks i am thinking about increasing their feed to feed them at night every other night.
i do not want any to keel over from overfeeding... i don't want any heart failure or bowed legs, so i am taking it a bit slower.
but they should have been ready to process tomorrow- and they aren't. at all. so what is the happy medium? they are on fermented feed.

do any of you have problems with them getting clogged nostrils from the wet feed?

With our first batch this ummer, we left food down 24 hours - however, we used NO artificial light, so they only ate during natural daylight hours. We were doing the same thing with this last batch and they were doing terribly! Not even half the size of the summer birds at the same age! And sickly too, some unable to walk well, etc. So we added artificial light, 24 hours on! They now can eat 24 hours a day if they want and they are doing a little better - growing a little (not as fast as I want - honestly, I just want to get them processed at this point and be done with it this winter), and seeming to be getting a little healthier also (walking better, etc). I can't answer about the clogged nostrils as we do not feed wet food.

I will tell you that we did continuous feed and we lost so many to heart failure and I will not do it again.

I fed 2x daily, FF, and allowed mine to free range. I was having a lot of sneezing until i switched them to FF. One or 2 did get stuffed noses, i cleaned their little noses if it happened. If you keep the mix thicker, its less of a problem. My feed mix was like a drywall mud/mortar thickness, or dry mashed potato? if that makes sense? We got an average 51/2 - 6 pound weight dressed, but that was in the fall. I will say, they were very lean, almost no fat whatsoever. That made me very happy, i am trying to keep our family's fat intake at a minimum. Husband was so pleased he wants to order 100 next round...
