In the Brooder
Thanks folks for these ideas. I have a broody hen right now and eggs should hatch any day, if all goes well. She's on 12 eggs. It's winter in Ontario right now (today it's -10C) and my plan is to rig up a big dog crate inside the chicken coop for the chickies and the momma and let her out sometimes to do her thing and reconnect with her other hen friends and then keep her in the cage during the night for sure. I'll also have a heat lamp in one spot so when she's not there the chickies can huddle under the heat. I'll also wrap the dog crate in vapour barrier or cardboard to minimize drafts. Any thoughts or suggestions here? (I'll also use pine shavings for the chickies, although the rest of the coop is sand only.)
