Winter Care šŸ™„

What are your coldest Temps for the season?
I see that the coop is large enough for them to all fit but I wondered if they were avoiding using it because they're too crowded and might pick on each other a bit.
I'm wondering about the lowest Temps because, if they're not too low, your set up would probably be all right with deep bedding and the wind breaks you mentioned you added.

We are in the middle of Indiana. In the last few years we have seen -6 to -12 at times in cold snaps. Hasn’t been that bad the last couple of years but it has that potential. Typically in the teens. I keep thinking of things as we post back and forth, so the additional ā€œoddā€ thing about the coop is that they all laid in it this summer to escape direct sunlight that would hit the run for a couple of hours mid day during the summer. So why not now? šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Well, hello from a fellow Hoosier!
Animals are just strange sometimes. I would think there is a reason they're not going in it but I don't really know what it would be.
In the Winter time my duck coop has a completely open front and the ducks do great with some thick bedding.
With the access to the coop and making sure they have straw and the wind break, that should be OK. Hopefully they'll use the coop if they need to.

Well I couldn’t have asked for advice from anyone better than someone who knows the winters we deal with. šŸ˜‚šŸ¤ššŸ»
I’m hoping that they are just not cold ā€œenoughā€ at this point and that’s why they’re not using it more. I just don’t understand them half the time. Lol
Sooooo, knowing a little about what we’re dealing with and it being Indiana. Would you recommend not using a heat lamp at all? Or is there a temp (if reached) that we should go ahead and plug it in.

I would skip the heat lamp for now. Ducks are pretty decent at handling the cold due to their fat and down feathers that insulate them when they swim.

My ducks will lay outside in the snow -15 and Warmer
I’m sure yours will be fine seeing as you don’t get to cold

Ok, you’ve helped me worry a little less. I know ducks are hardier but I still think of them like they use to say about dogs and cats where ā€œif you’re cold, they’re cold, bring them insideā€. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Oh yeah, I totally understand. šŸ˜…šŸ„°

I am not as cold as you (our lowest is usually in the teens) but we are currently in the upper 20s at night. I have a similar but smaller set-up, although mine are only in it at night. I fill the house portion with lots of hay so they can can kind of burrow in it and usually they all go in. If it is going to be a really cold night, I fill old bottles with hot tap water and place them under the hay. As they cool they give off a little heat. Usually the water isn’t even frozen in the morning.

That’s a good idea. I think my ducks are defective. Lol They were at least laying their eggs in ā€œsaferā€ spots out of the wind. The last two nights have been the coldest yet, in the high teens and now they are laying their eggs in the open in the only spot that has no wind bloke shelter let alone their coop. The ducks are obviously cold. I don’t know if it’s because this is their first winter or what? They used the coop this summer for escape from the sun, it just makes no sense. They are TERRIFIED of anything new so the tarps were scaring them half to death for awhile but I put them up way before cold weather and they are used to them now. I don’t know if maybe they developed a new fear of them. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø
