Winter egg laying

Oh, good. I thought I was doing it wrong for a minute

I would imagine it would set off the roos in the morning. I have no roos, so it doesn't matter in my case.

I turn the light on around 5pm and keep it on until I go back out in the morning... lol... I suppose I'll start turning it off at around 9 at night.

Actually it does matter; especially if you have the light on a timer.
At night you want your chickens to be able to go in and roost as it's getting dark. If they go in and mingle around before climbing up on the roost and then suddenly the light goes out, they won't be able to see to get on their roosts.
If you are going to add light, best to add it in the morning.

You are right on gritsar. I made that mistake once and what a commotion in the coop. I was lucky by still being in the barn and was able to plug the light in a dimmer and decrease the light little by little till they settled down.

Mrs.Puff :

I don't think it matters. Some people do AM, some PM, others both.

I was doing some in the morning and then some at night but when the lights shut off suddenly at night, they really fumble and squak trying to get to their roost.

My answer was to turn on low wattage bulbs at 2:30am and off again at 7:30am.

It took about two weeks but my Black Austrolarps are laying again. I get at least seven eggs a day out of 11 hens.

My Red Stars lay good anyway but I still give them extra light as well.

Someone should invent a timer for lights that comes on and goes off gradually over a 30 minute period. That would be a good seller!
