I am getting 1 egg a day from 4 pullets and don't use supplemental light. I plan ahead and freeze my extras for winter baking and save up the fresh for fried eggs on the weekend.
I feel their bodies could use the rest if they naturally slow/stop and I'm not going to force it.
That's exactly how I feel with my chickens.

I'm going to start freezing my eggs once we get enough to do so. This is the best idea I have heard of! You have helped me so much on every aspect with my chickens.

This is the first time I can remember none are laying ducks or chickens and I went an bought store eggs, boy I won’t do that again. @DuckyDonna Froze eggs wonder how that’s working?
My family doesn't like store bought. They're not the same. I love our rich orange yolks!

Look at the new stud I got at the swap yesterday! Hoping he will mate with our Polish! I haven't seen her lay an egg yet though.

Just a note that they don't taste good other than baking after being frozen. At least I don't think so, but maybe that's a mental thing since I know they're frozen.

I give eggs to Santa and Mrs. Claus when I have extras. She gave me a big hug and told me how much she loves having fresh eggs. Store eggs don't compare according to her. Honestly, my husband knows if he's eating a store egg too.

I have 2 Silkies got them in Oct. The older one I was told by the breeder had started laying but has not laied since arrival, the younger one hadn't started yet and still hasn't. I assume (and hope) that when the days get longer again I'll have eggs.....I hope!

I froze some my first year just to check it out, they weren't too bad scrambled but definitely a different texture than fresh. I never really needed to do this as my pullet hatching timing was good.
I wish I had froze some this fall tho...bought store eggs this weekend, not sure I hate them but it was weird.

Been years since I bought store eggs and was very surprised at how they had no taste and didn't even look good coming out of the shell. I bought organic non gmo free range too. High priced.

It IS weird buying them isn't it? My husband was appalled. I thought my timing was ok this year, my oldest birds are just over 6 months, but only 1 has continued to lay.

Do you have chickens too or just ducks? I've still never eaten a duck egg, might be able to pull that off here soon a friend has some that are laying.

From choosing which to buy, to fitting them into the bag, to breaking the sterile shell....all weird. They tasted fine in a scramble ham and cheese sammich, made with my excellent homemade bread. Hope to get a 'real' egg before these are gone to do a side by side taste test. Couple hens look close to ready and a nest was messed up this morning so thinking a pullet is close.

I have both, my dh won't eat duck eggs unless it's in baking products. So we eat chicken eggs and my dogs get most of the duck eggs except for the ones I keep for baking. I like duck eggs for making egg salad. He doesn't know it but he eats them that way. It's what you are use too. Most of us here in the USA grew up on chicken eggs. Now my goose lays an egg very similar to a chicken egg other than being huge. Omelets are awesome.

My husband hasn't eaten a store bought egg for years. When we didn't have chickens we were getting them from friends.

I'll have to freeze them and see how it works. My dogs probably won't care if they're frozen then cooked.

I gave some to my Dr and he's addicted to them now. I also gave some to his other patients, now they all want more.
