winter feeding??

For small flocks, wild bird suet piles on the calories and gives excellent feathercoat after a molt...but is expensive for larger operations...remember your birds will need 3x what they eat in summer.

We have been feeding the following recipe on most cold mornings. Is this safe to do every morning? There are 3 buff orps and 3 silkies, and they really love this. They are 27 weeks old and we have not gotten one egg.

1/4 cup oatmeal [in the tall round canister at grocery store]
1/2 cup water
1 cup layer/egg mash powder

We cook oatmeal and water for 1-1/2 minutes and then add the layer/egg mash powder. We feed to them warm.

They always have fresh water once or twice daily and layer/egg mash powder, grit and oyster shell available.
