A little later this year but winter has officially arrived here with our first of many snowfalls. Last night 7 homeraised birds had to be removed from our Manitoba maple trees to be put inside the barn for winter. It dipped to -8 C at night. The main flock still had access to the outdoor run but only a few Red Sal Links dare to venture out for a bit of snow. I took this shot of the Northern lights a few nights back a sure sign of the coming season. I expect a spectacular show now any night and will post a better shot then.

-8 C is about 18 F. It always helps to make it sound a bit warmer.

I'm amazed that we have two 2.5 week old chicks running around out in the backyard. Our overnight temps are hovering around 20. That momma chicken is sure good at keeping them warm.

I have 23 more in the brooder on the backporch. I hope they can take the transition in a week or so outside. We have another brooder in the greenhouse - but it can still get cold at night.

Love the northen lights pic. Mary Ann

Frozen Chicken, I have been looking for the northern lights here, but haven't seen them yet this year. They are so beautiful. I had a dream a week or so ago that I seen them. Our temps have been dipping down into the teens during the night here. I hope we get some of that snow down here in SD.

We've had some snow up here as well. The chickens seem happy though. They are allowed to free range if the weather’s not too bad. As you can see from the pictures below, they aren’t afraid to get up on our front deck and peck at the birdseed that’s fallen out of the bird feeders.

Rusty, Penny and Sonja on the deck. Sonja Henie is the light colored hen.

I wonder how they'll like it when the snow gets three feet deep?
