Winter in NY

Hello everyone, was wondering what I should do for my girls during the NY winters? I haven't seen any coops hooked up with a heat source like a heating lamp or anything, or do chickens not need heat. I would think all animals need some kind of heat but I know that barn animals usual don't have heat. So are the chickens the same? As long as they have a good built coop that's not too large and plenty of bedding to keep warm? Thank you for any info! Jrhy

Chickens can adapt to some brutally cold temps as long as they have a nice draft free coop, with plenty of ventilation in the roof to vent out all the moisture from pooping and breathing. About 1 square foot per bird in the eaves, birds roosting low to the floor, and the warm moist air will rise up and out your vents. If you don't have proper venting, this warm moist air will rise and fall back down as water or frost, giving them frost bite and making them very wet and cold.
