Winter Preparations

We bought a home in the mountains (zone 5) and inherited the chickens that were there. We're new at this, wondering if there is something we supposed to do for the coming winter? How hardy are chickens?

What is the chicken coop like? Is it going to be big enough for them to spend a couple of days locked inside all together and not be too cramped?
