Our pullets are now 22 weeks old. They're a mix of Dominiques, Star Spangled Hamburgs, Cuckoo Marans, and Columbian and Silver Laced Wyandottes.
We're in MA, so daylight is still short, and we don't provide artificial lighting. They're in a run in a big barn with access all day to free range - but on cold (which is most) days, they seem to prefer to stay inside.
My question: When might these birds start laying? Given that they will be entering sexual maturity in the middle of winter, should I expect they won't lay for a couple of months more?
Also, my older hens, who have a separate coop away from the barn, have slowed down dramatically in terms of laying. (I don't mind, just curious here.) Does that mean they'll be even more productive in the spring?
We're still in our first year of living with chickens, so still learning everything. This site has been a godsend! Thanks, all.
