You could at least plug the unit into an exterior thermostat set to turn on at 33 degrees. Then your heater only gets electricity when the air temperature is 33 degrees or lower. Water doesn't get heated until there is a possibility of it freezing. Better than nothing.

Pics of the sand heater??? That sounds awesome! I had a 3 gallon heated waterer but after dumping the thing down my leg atleast once if not twice evertime I try to fill it, I'm done. I put the dog bowl in tonight. I can't wait to see pics of your set up
