Winter waterer

We have cold winters and I'm looking for something automatic. Does anyone use a: Miraco LilFount Pet Waterer w/heat?

I'm wondering if this would be hard to keep clean?

...or if anyone has other heated, automatic watering suggestions.

Not familiar with that particular one, but lots of folks use heated dog waterers. You can also make one for next to nothing out of a light bulb socket and something like an old fashioned round cookie tin or even a concrete block to protect the light bulb. Of course you need to protect the electrical stuff from the chickens. Lots of threads on here about this, or Google.

I would like to use an automatic waterer, but even with a heater it seems like the outer lines/tubes would freeze. I dunno

I am looking into this very thing right now. It might be early August, but in northern Wisconsin it is time to start getting ready for our long winter. Am going to Tractor Supply this week and see what they have for heated water containers.

Yes I did use a Lilfount pet water with heat made by miraco last winter for my chickens and ducks. http://www.miraco.com/LilFount.aspx

I worked great. It did get dirty inside becasue of the ducks but they get anyting dirty. It has a big foam O ring that you need to wet everytime you put the lid back on to make the lid on tight to keep the gravity feed working right. But once I learned how to do this it worked great. I kept it outside in the pen and never had a problem with it freezing and I live in West central Illinois.

I also used a Kane dog water also http://www.countrysidepet.com/kane-5gallon-heated-dog-waterer.aspx. It was also heated and worked great but had to figure out a way to keep it level.

If you dont want to use the 3 gallon heated poulty fount you might want to use a heated dog bowl or a automatic dog waterer. The Heated Dog Bowl is not automatic so you will have to fill it up. The Automatic Dog Waterer can be placed on a Electric Heater Base to keep it warm. You will have to insulated the hose running to the waterer so it will not freeze. Many of our poultry customers use the Auto Dog Waterer with the Electric Heater Base. I will include pictures of the following.

Will those heater bases cause any problem with wood chips or other miscellaneous flammables? Especially if the waterer gets knocked off it.

I've used the heated bases for many years, but I do set them on small cement blocks. That keeps them above the litter.
