I'm planning on burying welded wire cloth 5 or 6 inches under the dirt
in the run. What is the largest size mesh I can get away with
to keep the raccoons from gaining access ....I'm thinking about
either 2x4 inch mesh or 1 x 2 inch. Thanks for the help.

If I may offer a suggestion. they make welded panels for hogs and other stuff. some panels I was looking at had as small a holes as 3"x 3". some of the panels come one rod long in most cases (33'feet) they are very thick and are galvanized so as not to rust. I would think laying them under whatever it is your trying to protect would prevent most predators getting through from the bottom up. you shouldn't need to bury them as they would sink in by themselves over time.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm installing 1/2 x 1/2 inch welded wire to the outside of the run
and extending it down below the ground level about 12 inches. But
to also be on the safe side, I'd like to also lay some wire mesh as
described in my original post, below the dirt floor of the run. However
to use the 1/2 X 1/2 inch would get to be costly.... the larger mesh
being less expensive. Just trying to figure out how much larger mesh I can go with
(just under the dirt floor) while still keeping it effective and keeping predators out. thanks

Depending on the size of your coop and run area that could run into a bit of money. I'm not knocking that--personally I believe in the Fort Knox approach--helps you sleep better at night. With that thought in mind have you considered electric. A few strands of high tensile smooth wire on offsets outside your fence at various levels might send those nasty racoons (as well as dogs, coyotes, skunks, possums, etc.) running for a new place to try and score an easy meal. One good pop is usually enough to discourage future attempts at getting to your poultry. You can learn lots about electric at Premier1: http://www.premier1supplies.com/ Their free catalog is an educational tool.

If you decide to use electric I suggest getting the best charger you can afford. You want to leave an impression with potential predators.

That's a lot of work when laying the wire flat on the ground will serve the same purpose

Again.... thanks for the replies.
I don't mind the "extra" work. I'd sleep better knowing I've done
all that could be done to keep the flock safe.

I was concerned about the cost though, using all this welded wire.
But I think I've come up with a good solution.... I've been trying to think
of an inexpensive wire cloth/fence type product I could use on the ground.
I looked at the wire mesh that's embedded in concrete... and then I thought
of diamond plate lathe sheet... the stuff that's used when plastering a wall.
an 8' long by 27 inch wide piece is $8.50 at home depot. I figure i'd need about
6 pieces = $50.... which I think is less expensive than other options I've looked at.
