wire on bottom of run?

My rabbits and chickens share a run. I want to put wire on the bottom, if I cover the wire with dirt how deep do you think I should make it?

I was thinking about a foot of dirt to allow some scratching and dust bathing.

6-8 inches would work as well. Don't need to be a full foot!

I thought about just doing a few inches, but thought it might be fun for the rabbits and chickens to have some digging room. I have one hen (a cochin) who loves to dig holes and sit in them.

My chickens dig deep holes for dust bathing. If you don't want them down to the wire I would go with almost a foot. If you don't care about exposed wire, half of that will do.
