Wire- Size of the spaces?

Is there anything that can climb and would be able to get through wire thats probably like 1x2"? I can get really cheap strong wire this size, so I thought if it would work it would help my waller alot. Things just reaching through will not be a problem because wood will be 3 feet up, im just worried as far as I know some critters can get through really small spaces.

Lots of animals can climb, so make sure the top of your run is covered as well. That type of wire is sturdy so easy to climb on, not like chicken wire.

I think thats the size wire I used but depening on where you are at, Weasels, Mink, and rats could always be a concern with that size wire I would think.

My wire fencing is 2x4 and so far I have had no problems. I think you will be o.k with what you are considering on buying.

really 2 x 4 is OK? I am still under construction and have been looking for an alternative to doing the WHOLE run in hardware cloth. I am making the run bigger than I had initially planned so the hardware cloth would be VERY expensive. But I am now thinking maybe going 1/2 up with plywood and then the rest of the way with hw cloth but I was looking at the 1/2" hole size and its more expensive. But if I could get away with 2x4 that would be perfect! I live in south Jersey and we only have possum,coons,rats,groundhogs.

If thats what you have for predators, I would go with 2x4 also. I take back what I said about me having 1x2, I went and looked and it is 2x4.

I have rigid 2 x 4 horse fence with another 2 x 4 welded/galvanized fencing layered over that to stagger the holes and make openings smaller....this is on one pen. The other I have the same 2 x 4 fence panels and 1/2" hardware cloth 3' up on that. Dug 12-16" into the ground and laid metal and more fencing to prevent diggers. Netted the top with top flight netting 1" heavy duty, and then set a hot wire around the perimeter of the fence to prevent climbers. So far so good.

Most snakse will easily get through 1"x2". A lot of it depends on the predators in your area and IF you have a dog that stays around the cage 24/7. Having a good guard dog should keep most other predators away, so 1"x2" would probably work. Also, you can double layer the both 1-2 feet with chicken wire or carpenters cloth...that should keep most raccoons, possums, mink and whatnot from reaching through the side and getting to your flock.
