Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi all--back from our "party" with DH's work. It was OK--I had great bowling scores...I think a 62, a 111 and a 93! Bet you all want me on your team next season hey?

God I hate bowling! I did sell a few dozen eggs though! LOL! Welcome to our little corner Apyl--pull up a chair and chat a while! I need to go to bed too CC...and FT--those are some adorable piglets!
Jim--are you planning on getting into the LGD business now? I think dogs are a little harder to do than chickens etc! At l east that's what my BFF tells me!
OK-off to bed for me--bowling must really take it out of a person! Nighties! Terri O

Apyl, hows that pronounced? apple? :D
2nd,
in your kitchen?

I would rethink that. theres gonna be ALOT of dust, and I mean ALOT of dust, it will be everywhere! if you must have them in the house, a basement room would be better. one that you can close the door, just to keep the dust in there. with 25 birds in there?,
IDK how big your kitchen is, but the brooders gotta be a pretty big box.

just saying. good luck to u!

anywho, talk later

Yeah , like Apple lol it's a nick name my cousin gave me when we were kids and it kinda stuck. As for the chicks, well we live in a trailer so no basement. My kitchen it pretty big and as the chicks grow I was going to separate my egg layers from my meat birds. I only plan to keep 10 egg layers. The other brooder will be in the livingroom until they all go outside. Luckily I am home all day so I'll get to clean alot lol ;)

good morning, and welcome apyl.. and don't do it. 25 chicks in your kitchen is a bit much for that long. maybe a week,, two weeks tops.. remember they will be growing, and doing it fast.. in the first week, they will be at least four times their original size..

You cannot imagine how much dust and dander they produce..

what kind of outdoors shelter do you have?

You can start chickens any time.. as long as you have a warm, dry place for them..

what breeds are you getting? are you going to be butchering them? are you going to be breeding them for hatching eggs? If you are going to be breeding them, do you have separate cages to separate the breeds?

It might not make any difference to you right now if you have mixed breeds, but a few years down the road you WiLL change your mind, Then it will be a real chore to straighten out your breeds..

just saying,,,,,,,,,,,,

Bees.. yes, bees will take flight when their nest/hive warms up to about 50F.. I had that happen to a hive one January when the temp was about 20F, but the sun beat on the hive and warmed it up.. the bees took off and froze in mid flight just 12 feet from the hive... there was a distinct circle of thousands of bees, dead in the snow, all the way around the hive.

by now, most people that know me a little have noticed that if there ever was a mistake to be made, I have made it..

..............jiminwisc...........
Thanks for the tips. We planned on 25 so we can butcher 15 for us and our neighbors. I only plan to keep 10 egg layers. We have a shed we turned into a chicken coup. It's also close enought to the house that if need be I could run the heat lamp out there. So I guess once the chicks get to big for my booders in the house I can just put them out there with it heated. Or maybe keep the 10 egg layer in longer and moved the meat birds outside. hhmm I guess you guess have me thinking now .

Windy Morning All...Welcome apyl...good folks here...sounds like you are getting ready for the chicken math to start. If you aren't aware of chicken math...don't worry...it will find you!

I'm thinkin apple too...raim.

Good job with the hawk Cind. Good luck moving Doc's wood furnance.

I was thinking, how about the bathroom. I have a seprate shower from our garden tub and the garden tub is large enough to hold the 1st brooder and we could still have the shower to use. But would the moisture from the shower hurt the chicks?

Apyl !!
Yep you will fit right in ! Chicks in the house !!! No problem here ! You don't even want to ask !!!

LOL

My kitchen is small so there is no room there but they have been in every other room in the house !!!

Oh and who said I'd be outside with the Piggy's !!!! Well I am housed with them !!! For the time being they are in the house !!! I want them to tame down a bit before I introduce them to Porky.
One got out of the pen yesterday and I thought I would never find it under all the furniture etc. I looked and looked and looked.
Came into the bedroom and low and behold it was standing by the bathroom door. I herded it into the bathroom and caught it !!!! So I guess they are smart, it took a poo poo while it was there !!

So you guys never guessed what sexes I got !!! So start guessing !!!

Sad about the bee's. Nature is cruel isn't it.

Oh and that sad story about the man and his children. Makes you wonder if he really was guilty of killing his wife after all. Or can you imagine if he was innocent and someone tries taking your children from you ? Either way it is sad. Kind of makes you think he was guilty because of his fathers actions but that is just my thoughts, feel sorry for him if he really was innocent. I truly feel for the wife's parents. What a terrible loss.
DrHa, I think you ought to open a Chickie day care. You are such a good Chickie daddy !!
How are they all doing ?
Bf4m how are your little darlings? Everyone Else's?
I've got broody hens all over the place. I'm getting swamped with chicks.
I see the bantam turkens hatched out 1 chick so with my 3 that makes 4 turken chicks.
One of the hens is sitting on 6 eggs !!
My 2 black and 1 buff hen paired with the lavender silkie roo hatched out 3 different colored chicks.
wee.gif
Now that I've established fertility I can start selling eggs. Now I just need to get my donkey up out of bed in the morning and collect eggs before they start sitting on them !!

In six months I'll be in the paint and lavender silkie business !!!!

TO your husband sounds just like my. It it ain't broke don't fix it. If it is broke don't fix it either !!! LOL
Well, that's all folks, I can't remember anything else right now !!

Morning everyone, and welcome Apyl......... I had my chicks in the house last year though they lived in the basement many found there way up here for treats or treatments, in my kitchen.LOL
I had 43 chicks in my basement in 2 brooders then in a separated 10x10 dog kennel until our weather started to cooperate in June............ late spring last year good ole Wisconsin for ya.

Anyway I think I'm gonna have a broody before long my BR peaches is being very strange this last week, she is on the nest all most all day, even sleeps in there every night for 5 days now. so I started collecting her some eggs to throw under her if so... I have been taking away all eggs everyday, when she gets up to eat.... not sure what to do this is my first maybe broody..... I'm afraid if I give her the eggs she will leave the nest and they will get cold........ so waiting to see if she is actually gonna be broody..any other signs I should watch for? any suggestions would be good...... I have the wrong roosters in that pen just now anyway...... so I really don't want her to brood.. but I could give her my Pea combs eggs to hatch, that's the roosters that are in their just now my EE and my Fred the WW.
If I give her eggs do you think she will stay in the nest.as far as I can tell she hasn't laid me an egg in 3 or 4 days........ I think it's too early, but this warm weather has everything confused out there. Weatherman says cooling down again though to the 20's so what should I do???????? Help guys. I could put her n the eggs in the brooder........ or should I leave her do her thing in the coop, with the others.. she's a top hen out there and gets after everyone else so I don't think anyone would get to the nest...... I do still have an occasional egg eater as well.....arggggggg chickens hehehe this chicky mom is a worry wart............ LOl. Well good day all...Kim

Hello!

My three chicks are doing well. I brought them up for handling yesterday. My second son had Venus on him. She seemed perfectly content to climb on him, sit on him, poop on him. He says they have bonded! LOL! I told him he better be prepared to bond with his silkie in June, but I don't think I'm letting chicks sleep with the kids... :)

I can't wait to see how many chicks hatch out at school. I'm being tempted by SOME people here to try out my Brinesa in April. For Pete's sakes... I don't even have a coop built yet!!! I don't even know how much I like chickens... You are all a HORRIBLE influences....

Seriously... One batch of chicks end of Jan, one batch of chicks end of Feb, one batch of chicks in mid June. I must NOT take part in an April hatch... No matter HOW tempting!!!

Oh Good Lord! I found little black bugs in the pen where that silkie is with the crook neck!
barnie.gif
MAYBE THATS the problem??

I have been itching ALL morning, kind of like when someone mentions head lice. (are you itching your head yet?)
gig.gif

I'm going to town in a bit to get some seven. is that the right stuff, bigZ? lol.
Dust EVERYTHING and bird, right? and repeat in a week? should we attempt to shovel out the coops? or is dusting gonna fix it? ok now for eggs?, should we pitch all eggs for these 2 weeks? :( I pitched yesterdays eggs and this mornings, yes because of this but also there was yolk and ALOT of poo on them. but mainly cause I was just disgusted. and still itchy
barnie.gif

anywho any answers? before I head out? Thanks
