Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Oh TO you ARE sick. I was just passin the buck. The chillins are lovin their new straw, suppose I better get them some grit. mazo found Bill B's # will give it a call soon. Betting there will be some silence at first on his end if it's him, thinking that it's some kind of scam. Have a cousin that lives in Janesville and he said he doesn't think the ground ever froze but he doesn't get out much. A little chilly and windy but the sun's shining.

Kristip... Look up dry incubation on here... It improved my hatch rate tremendously!

I still can't hear out of half my head, and the other half of my head was off anyway....

Good Morning all !!

What I have found with using my Genesis Hovabator 1588 is to follow the manufacturers directions. Period. All of the incubator brands have different size water trays etc and they have tested and tested their products to give you the best hatch rates.

My best hatch was from my first batch that I followed the directons.
Then I had some Ameraucana eggs that I went to get in GB. They were al slimey and I didn't have a good hatch. Got more eggs, monkied around with the the humidity etc and same results.

After talking with someone else that hatched eggs fromt his person. She had the same results.

I think the chicks suffocate "drown" when their air cel doesn't get big enough, which has a lot to do with the humidity etc.
I make big holes in the bottom of egg cartons, size between a Nickel or Quarter so they can still get the humidity from below as well as fresh air.

I have read (can't remember where) that if you incubate in an upright position then you should hatch in an up right position and same if you incubate in a horizonal posititon, then hatch that way.
Makes sense to me, because if the chick has started to shift in the eggs in an upright postition then laid on its side it might make it harder for it to right itself. ???? JMHO
Then if the air cel isn't big enough it could have problems.

I've noticed on alot of my eggs that the air cel at hatching time isn't nearly as big as the "book" says. I've had good hatches and I've had some don't make it !! ??????? Could be a lot of reasons.............

I still don't know what eggs I'm giving to the classroom next week to hatch. They want them to hatch a week earlier then I had thought so I never separated.
PLUS I have the same problem as Cindlady, no room. I have my brooders over flowing with silkies right now that I have no idea where to put !!!

The classroom is giving the chicks back to me so I don't want mixed breeds. Not that I don't like them but then I'll have a bigger problem finding room to separate the breeds !!!

Geezz........... Chicken Math Sucks !!!!!! Why do the little devils need to eat so much ???? LOL
Just think of the coops I could build with that money !!!! Can't wait for the snow to melt and spring to get here. Might save a few PENNIES on the feed bill.

Ok, coffee is almost done. Lots to do today, I've been slacking lately. This Auntie thing is stressing me out more then I thought.
Playing solitaire has kept my mind off of things and my chores !!!

Hi Had a long post and lost it. This one will probably be shorter. My LG is now at 100.2* ~ 42% which I am happy with. Need to keep checking it today. It is harder to keep the Hum. up than than the other one. My cochins are fluffy so am not sure they are all fertile, good because I really dont need 2 incubators full of eggs to hatch. I have never fiddled with an incubator so much before. Awe well once I get it down pat it will be easier. Next time I will set it like what you said Jim. Without the water in at first. Tried and true method good for me.

Glad to hear from you Cind.

MLH the BYC distorts and crunches my pictures to a small size. Is there an email I can send a picture to?. I have an EE picture I would like to add. I sharpenned it a little and boosted the color a little is that ok or should I find the original? "spending the night with the relatives" LOL

CC I hope your head feels better soon.

My LG instructions were bad.

I have always liked hatching them in the egg cartons with the holes cut out before I had a turner. Much easier to hand turn too. Just prop up one end of the egg cartn. I used to put some rubbery shelf liner with holes in it on the screen which helped for traction, but couldnt find any the other day. Was stuck at home with lakes in the dirt driveway. Maybe I will see how it is today.

Cleaned up doggy mess and part of coop yesterday. Better try cleaning some more.

LOL, Mazo is not a very big town and I use to know everyone or at least the family someone belongs too! I know a few people with the last name DrHa is asking about but my father might have a better idea. I looked up the guy and know the neighbors of him but not Mr. Brewer himself, but like I said, my dad might....I will ask tonight.

just got off the phone and dad does not recognize the name...

I read about the egg carton idea on here a couple of years ago and I gotta say I like it. I still hand turn my eggs but when they go into lock-down, I put them into the egg cartons. They seem to have no trouble hatching (and sometimes it seems they pip out even faster) and they are not rolling each other all over the incubator. It also keeps the incubator/hatcher MUCH cleaner. I have only hatched bantam eggs though and they do lay slightly sideways in the carton. Don't know if that makes any difference or not.

And the snow is gone! That might be the fastest melt I've ever seen. Now it is all rushing into the crick behind the house.

And yes I saw Red Wing Blackbirds today too!!!! Yeah! TO glad you're starting to feel better, keep it up. It was Julie that you got 'little roo' from.

Here is Cartman's face, lol. It was January and the boys were in the sandbox. Never thought I'd see that. Thanks for looking at my etsy stuff bf4. Its fun. :)

Tiki- sent you a PM

TO-replied to your PM

DrH-Man as soon as you said "core" I knew that was the right word for those paper rings!
lol.png
I set the eggs on their sides (or with the little pointy egg ends slightly tipped down) on those little rings and turn them three times a day. The rings prevent the eggs from rolling right back to where they started. The quail eggs I hatch don't get rings and don't get turned but seem to hatch just fine.

Amy-cute kid!! Love that smile!! How perfect is life when one can play in the sandbox in January while living in WI!!!

Kristi-Good luck with the hatch!!! It will be fine! Like FT said follow the directions and you'll do fine!

Ok time to go do chores....
