Oh Boy I hit the Mother Lode today!
I went to visit a guy in Mukwonago who had some Ameraucaunas for sale. Now, I figured he was like everyone else who's selling "ameraucaunas"...that it would be a small operation and the birds would be EEs. But on the phone he swore that they were the real deal, so not having any gainful employment at the moment, I took a ride out to his place.
Holy Cow!!!!
He is probably one of the biggest ameraucauna breeders in the US, and he's got 300 breeding stock in three barns. Oh man, I wish I had brought my camera. I bought 3 four week old blue hens from him, and I also picked up a dozen eggs for the fridge. What a nice guy, he's laid off too so he gave me a tour of his barn where he keeps all the best birds. The most beautiful black, blue and wheaten ameraucaunas you've ever laid eyes on. He sells his eggs on ebay and also ships birds across the US. He's not much older than me and he's been keeping chickens for 50 years! He helped develop the breed.
He's got a 1000 egg incubator that's cranking out chicks in the spring and he sells hatching eggs locally and nationally.
So now I've got three 4 week old chicks that I've got to acclimate to the hen house. I put them in with the rest to see how they'd do but the bigger birds started going right at them, so I separated them with an X-large dog kennel that I had, so they are resting comfortably in there. After they all feather out I'll start re-introducing them to the flock, they should be alright in a week or two.
Tomorrow I'm culling three roosters, and from they way the rest of them are developing, there probably will be a few more. I've got to post some pics tonight of the ones I'm scratching my head about and maybe you can sex them.
If any of you are looking for purebred ameraucaunas, do I have the hookup for you!!!
