Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Amy all I have left are the three adults. I am going to call the Police today and see if I can get an extension on the 5 days.... today is day 5...

Gotta fly!

Good cool Morning All! Of course it's gonna rain we were thinkin about heading up to the camper. Guess I'll wash the Jeep just ensure some rain. Jim told L yesterday that I got the mower blades all sharpened up for next year. Bigz still watchin the cuc's for eaters, no heads on the broc yet. You guys are drivin me nuts-er. Took a good look around all the berries are burnt up and doubt there will be any grapes this year. Enough berries for 1 pie in the freezer

but plenty of jelly from last year. Processed more dill yesterday. Now have enough for... drum roll please. 200Qts. Not giving away many pickles this year but think I can spare some dill. Thanks again Bigz! My to do list is about done. Was thinking I could start making wood in the mornings but way too dry for that. Wouldn't want to burn the fire wood all at once. Dan glad you got some help with all your projects! Better get movin!

Dan, gonna pass the Spinosade reference along to my folks, they are having a terrible time with potato beetles, first time in 20+ years.
Only place in town is Horant's for this stuff, middle of the day when they are out in force,,, you get best results with it in a rotation, unfortunately for me nobody has another organic product, I did rotate with Neem oil which also acts as a fungicide

getting caught up and getting future projects done is a great feeling, today just 2 kids, the girls, but they do a much better job than the guys when it comes to detail,,,,,an hour in the gh then let them finish raking out the old coop (12" of pine cone leftovers),,,,maybe some painting this afternoon

I'll disc in the 1st buckwheat and get that new coop finished off

have a good day folks

How are your girls this morning? Any more losses?

Jim~sorry I didn't answer Jim, but I am so "uneducated" when it comes to breed specifics I would not have had a clue.

Ok, so, my broody butt spent her first night in the big cage and seems none the worse for wear. She looks at me, fluffs up, and gives me the stink eye but isn't really complaining too much. The whole thing may be for nothing tho if it gets too hot in the coop I will need to let her out.

Question for all you knowledgeable folk
bow.gif
would it interrupt the process if I moved the cage? Logic would say no, but I am just checking because who ever said anything to do with chickens was logical?

Good morning! Fox hunting with shells in the gun this morning....saw the beast but it didnt come over into the chicken area so I couldnt get a shot. Wouldnt you know it? He did however get a guinea at about 4:30...I heard them screaming out there and yelled "it's too early to shoot foxes!"
I did catch a cat though...it is the one I caught last spring and had fixed...thank God for ear tipping! I am going to ask the neighbors if it is the one that has been coming into their house...if so I will hold it in my milkhouse for a bit and see if I can get it to hang around here...he's been eating somewhere...pretty plump guy for sure!

Today is the chocolate baking contest...I am making two GF cheesecakes--I will take one to the birthday party tomorrow...posting a pic after it's done!

Taking the cat for a ride now...have a good one! Terri O

(PS) whoever posted the pic of that lily--it looks like the one that I have called "Custard"

Morning all!
Ahhh let's see.....got the critters all take care of. Chickens fed and watered, the rabbits all fed, watered and I cleaned all the cages and the big pen.

That being said, one would think that I actually liked rabbits. One would think that I actually care about the meat heard and make sure that they are all cool, have plenty to eat, drink fresh water every day, get treats, get scratched in itchy places, have toys to play with, get checked on 5 times a day, and get the good expensive hay from Zupreem because they don't like the cheap stuf. Expensive hay that I have to order off of Amazon because the local feed stores only carry it in small bags. One would even think that a Bunny Mom who religiously checks weather.com everyday to look at the heat index and had decided to keep in them in the cool bunny approved basement all summer might like meat rabbits. One would think that all those things would make then nice and thankful bunnies. But nope! The ungrateful snots! Here I was studiously cleaning out the doe pen, making sure to get all the dirty shaving out when the does decided to "help". Try moving a rabbit who does not want to leave her corner...once I convinced said rabbit to move out of the way, what does she do? She runs right on over and starts to destroy the garbage bag I was using to clean up the the pen. Then she decides that one rabbit is not enough to destroy it completely so she enlists her friends! Agh! Seriously Rabbit! I swear! I should just process the who bunch and be done with it! The snots!
I know using a garbage bag is not the best idea, but the trash cans I use are are filled up until dump day because I used those earlier in the week to clean their pen. Stupid me!
So after I got that all taken care of I gave them fresh water (in freshly scrubbed bottles), their food bowls (freshly scrubbed) filled with food and treats because for some reason I like rabbits, then I was held hostage!!! They would not let me out of the pen!! Geesh! Like I have all day to spend attending to rabbit whims!! SO after I lectured them on how lucky that are for meat rabbits and that most meat rabbits would not have it so good, I finally climbed over the pen to get out...they ignored my lecture and demanded more "special bunny salad". *sigh*. stupid cute adorable rabbits....

Ok rant about ungrateful bunnies over! Hah! Thanks for listening! At least the chickens weren't all complain-ie this morning!

What else. Oh there was a fire down the road from me near Busseyville. A farmers wheat field caught in fire. I don't know how much was lost not the cause. I would not be surprised to find some nimrod/moron tossed a cigarette butt out the window. I found one on my lawn the other day.Luckily it must have been out first or my lawn would have burned.

FT-That is one nice horse....I wish I could have one!

Vicki-I miss spoke. I use my flat iron to seal my mylar seed bags not my food saver. I use the food saver all the time and it's been a while since I used my mylar seed bags since I've got so many seeds stored already. I need to do package more seeds though. Maynards had seeds for 5 cents so I got a boat load. Don't know how well they'll do but for 5 cents, if I get a couple of plants then I'm good!
Also, moving your broody butt in her cage is fine. She will adapt. My guess is she is not to happy about the cage experience but she needs to stay in it to break her brood. It's only for a few days. While she might not believe it, life won't end-just her broodiness! LOL!

BL4-Good luck with the extension! Hope they give you some extra time...

Well, I best be off. Need to water the flower beds and mop floors..fun! Oh and maybe lecture the rabbits some more....ohhhh...Maybe they'd like a radio down there to listen to music.....

Vicky, I don't think there would be a problem moving the cage. After all you are trying to break her of something not trying to encourage anything.
Did you see my post earlier, there are BO's in Merrill on CL.

TO have a nice big slice of that pie for me eh !!!

We finally got some hay off our field. The neighbor cut, raked and bale it for us. We got 169 good bales. He baled another 49 that he took and is selling because there are milkweed in them and I won' feed it to my horses. He is selling his hay and the 49 bales to a farmer with cattle.
All in all I am paying about $.75 for my bales. Now we just need to mow down the other half of the field and get al the weeds cut before they go to seed. I really need to re-do the whole field but again I was born beautiful instead of rich !!!!

Still want that horse though !!

Speaking of horses, I called to talk to the Sargent about Cody and he is off for 7 days. Nice job hey, on 7 off 7 !!!

Coffee's getting cold, gotta go !! Drink up everybody while it's still cool R out then it's going to be !!

For those of you that mix in your younger birds with big girls. I recently added my now 15 week olds in with my big girls. I switchd out the layer food with the grower food which is higher protien, and that combined with the heat is killing my egg production. How long would you feed the grower to the younger girls. I noticed that some already are pinking up their combs. But not all.. we know how silkies mature... will be a while for that girl. They are all getting along fine. Silver surfer the rooster has even tried to "bond" with the young ones... jailbait that they are!
When would you move them back to layer food?

Did anyone have tips on agressive roosters? If my kids pick up a hen that squacks, silver runs and pecks the kids. Right now I told them to put a hand in his face to startle him. Any other kid tips.

Vicki, you shouldn't have a problem moving the cage with your broody in. When I did this for my broody I didn't have the cage even in sight of their coop. Once she broke down and went back to "normal" I just put her back in with the group in the coop with no problems. You do want the cage in an area with good ventilation, keeping her cooler.

Good Luck!

Good Morning everyone. The kids are actually getting along so I'm going to try to make it fast. I'm telling you I am exhausted, constant fighting and someone is always geting hurt. Anyway on the chicken front my flock is now 20 weeks old. The ducks are slightly younger. So I am assuming any time now I should start finding pullet eggs? Sorry Jim I have no clue about Harlequins this is my first year with ducks and I have Mallards and a Pekin ducks. Well since my post decided to freeze for so long no the kids are at it yet again. Boy I cant wait for this week to get over. ugh I'llbe back to talking to everyone Monday !
