Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

...the other day I cracked an egg in the pan and the whole thing was pink, with a larger red spot on the yolk. Grossed me out to see all that pink slime, so I scooped it all out of the pan...

I think I read here on BYC that someone fed their chickens leftover lobster shells and the next day all of the yolks were red and fishy smelling.

So the pinkish yolk could be that sort of thing, but is more likely diluted blood. I would have tossed it as well.

Going to drain the float bowl on the Case think there's some water in it. Could throw the charger on it and take it to Donny's for the winter. Better get the chickens a fresh bucket of water and get L's car warmed up.

Morning all

Holly molly it is cold out this morning. I was getting so used to the nice weather I did not ware sox or a coat to do morning chores. BRRRRR Fast pace chores. Good thing I go back out a few times a day. I even had to plug in waters.

I just want everyone who is interested in my Cornish X's that about 14 of them are pure Cornish X the rest are crossed to really nice roo. I am keeping two hens out of this hatch out for replacements. (The cross out) They make such good mothers when you out cross. In this batch that is for sale there will be an additional two really pretty hens if anyone is interested in raising Cornish.

In the years of raising Cornish I have tried so many times to keep a roo for breeding but they get so huge before sexual maturity breeding is a chore and quite funny to watch. It is this massive 20 lb bird on top of a 10 lb hen. Pancake city. And it is even funnier when they try breeding the non Cornish. This last batch is from my last last cornish roo and the yard roo. I do not have either of those roos.

I think I am done breeding cornish x's. My DH likes the taste of Orpington and has decided he wants that instead. UGH. I buy show stock and he decides he wants to eat $100.00 birds. I am looking forward to this new experiment just for that purpose. A bird that taste like Orpington, look like Orpington, and not show stock.

He does not understand that you can't just cull cockerels that you have to keep a cockerel pen and it is a waite and see if you have anything for show.

I am hoping he will also like the taste of Heritage RIR if my hatch out works. I only have one nice hen that is pretty old.

Cin. Terri ....or who ever wants them give me a call and we will set something up.

If you come here in two weeks for butcher it is 4 bags..you make it here and take them this week it is two bags. I have a freezor full of them and do not need anymore this year. It is too cold to take them to the fair for sale like I had originally planned.

Blood spots in eggs: Normal and no it has nothing to do with fertility.

not sure you can see this..but one of these eggs is fertile, one is not. Can you guess?

When you have more than a spot of blood in your egg, it usually means that during production a vein broke. It is normal in young or old hens as long as it is only one or two eggs. If it happens more than a couple of times the hen is a cull. She will have painful production and probably rupturing overy's. Have you ever butchered out a hen who should be producing and she is not? You butcher her out and she has hardened overys or cysts and just a few eggs developing?
In theses eggs there is a difference for a reason
One is a POL first lay egg.

delisha it's good to have you on here with all your knowledge! That's a screamin deal on the x's! If I were closer I'd snarf them up! Snooze ya it's a nice enough rack but you should have seen the body, he didn't have a pic for me of that. MLH now that I think some more think it was dk1 [Deb} whose been MIA for a very long time that was going to do chicken cards.

Thanks! I can't tell from your picture, but does one have a small "disc"on it? I maybe would have eaten that egg, but my DH is kind of squeamish about eating our eggs. I finally got him over it, and I think that may have set us back! Weird huh considering we live on a FARM. Silly boy
