Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

oops forgot- I have been trying to find a place that sold white chantelcler hatching eggs or chicks to go with my pair. Well I found the Chick Hatchery, and they charge $8 per chick, minimum of 25 chicks, straight run. Is this a good deal? Ugh- I just wanted a few because I want to hatch some of my own chicks. I would have just bred my chanticlers, but someone told me that they were a rare breed and I should not be cross breeding them. Any of your input would be really appreciated. Thanks!
Here is a pic of the girls. I got them from Gina Neva waaaaay back. (Is she still on here?)

do you have a chantacler rooster ? It is OK to breed your own.. even if they are related,, just don't go generation after generation..

I assume you meant inbreeding,, not cross breeding.. cross breeding will give you only mutts..

If you bought your chicks from a hatchery, there is a good chance that they are not related at all..

I am a cheap sob, so $8 sounds high to me.. If you are just going for that breed for yourself.. If you are planning a big breeding program and selling chicks and eggs, then look for new blood lines..

hatcheries are in the business of selling chicks.. so I am guessing your "straight run" would be a good percentage of roosters,, they don't want your competition, eh ?

eta,, if you do not have a rooster, forget about buying chicks, and just go shopping for a rooster........

She seems a bit pink. Not sure if that is your camera color or not. She should be darker red. Nothing wrong with the new quills coming in. They look nice and healthy. They look like they are growing in, not falling out.

Hard to say what is going on with the pink color

25 chicks is quite a few, maybe you can find someone who wants that breed.

They are rare and it would be nice to have it sustained. I think if you are considering it, it is wonderful.
You might want to keep looking for a while, or perhaps someone else wants to order some chicks and you can split the order or something.
They have egg swap section on here. You might want to try placing an add for wanting eggs or chicks.
I think a few on here are experts at that bidding and haggling stuff

Quote: No I just have these two girls. I had thought about just using my rooster, but I guess that wouldn't be a good idea to cross a chantecler, and I should keep the breed pure. I can't find any other places with chanticlers.
cross breeding them will not do a thing with their pureness.. only the offspring will be "contaminated.."

what kind of rooster do you want to use ?

That's a great idea- I will look for it. I did find a chantecler thread on here too and asked about where to buy eggs or chicks. Guess we'll see!

I just have a mutt rooster that I love from Cindlady. I love my chanticlers too so I was just going to breed them and see what came out until I found out that they were kind of special. Here is my rooster-

Evening All...before I forget....Judge, you can get chantelers from sandhillpreservation... they are $5 there....you need to order a min of 25...straight run, they don't sex their birds. They limit them to 15 of each color and have the new rare red color too.

Angie sorry about your loss (viqueens) but it was bound to happen....Seattle looked good today....I didn't like that one bit.

Sorry to hear about the predator prob bbp. It's no fun to keep them locked up, that's for sure.

Glad you had a good time at the party Cind.

Nice pics again...thanks for posting them.

Good luck with the laser Jim...I have to make a appointment for next month...the clouds are coming back in the right eye again....dang.

I vote for Terri to start the chickenstock thread....whatcha think TO? I would ask again for the hm baileys recipe, but i know you are just going to ignore me soiwon't.

Hi again--maybe you could just find one somewhere on here or on CL Judge? Usually folks are plenty happy to get rid of extra roos. I think that $8 is pretty high for chicks...although I dont know how "rare" they are! And if you have to get 25 that is a pretty big chunk of change! Good luck.

Jim I forgot to tell you how cool Ollie looks! (even nekkid) The dog house turned out really sharp too! Does puppy or Dora sleep in it yet? I have a Nigerian goat that sleeps in a doghouse--it's only a plastic one though!

So we each had a piece of the brownie I made. It was OK but kinda mushy in texture. I dont think I will grind up the pecans with the rest of the ingredients if I make them again. They needed some texture. The taste was OK...first time I ever made brownies with beans. BL4--what is the texture of that cake you have made with garbanzos? There is a recipe there that might be the same one as yours.

God the cats fed and chores done...now it's time for me to go to bed...AAHHHHH--looking forward to it.
